RustMIDI music community started back in December 2019 when the new Instruments DLC came out in Rust. Before this time, you would pick up a wood guitar and have to look up and down using your mouse to change the notes and make some weird sounds in the process, but now you had the ability to input MIDI files into Rust to be played on over a dozen instruments.
I started compiling some songs from a few free sites but realized some of them arent working on the piano in Rust and it sounds all jumbled, so I opened the MIDI file up in music software and figured out there are drum tracks in many of the songs so they wont work on a single instrument like in Rust.
I started sprucing up some of the free songs I found and putting together a collection of songs to play in Rust. I came up with about 250 songs and had a good library going but then I learned how to convert sheet music and audio into MIDI using AI and that opened the doors to a lot more MIDI songs. Lastly, I started learning some of these songs on the piano in the process and have been transcribing songs by hand for almost a year now to contribute more high quality custom MIDI songs you wont find anywhere else.
The first MIDI pack went up for sale in 2023 with only 5,000 songs and through some miracle, sales and interest have been growing steadily over the last few years with a few popular Rust streamers buying the pack, one of whom bought it on stream during the Rust Kingdoms event which created a lot of new interest and re-motivated me to keep working hard on this pack and the website and tutorial videos.
With the Discord channel growing to nearly 250 members and the YT tutorial video getting over 20k views, more work will be done to increase the selection of songs, increase the quality of the songs already in the pack, upload more informative videos and video game music content will be coming out on YouTube in the second half of 2025.
Members occasionally get together in the Discord channel for #jam-sessions and make music together and we have started a new feature on our website to promote other content creators who make video game music related content.
This project has gone from a folder of music to a community of friends and music enjoyers and on behalf of myself and the 3 man team that help make this thing work, wed like to thank you for your interest and support and wish you happy music making!
